Malaysia Penang in 1800s

Light Street, Penang
As one of the early roads mapped out by Captain Drancis Light from whom this street its name, Light Street wasrelatively buil-up by mid 1800s with a school, government buildings, private mansions and town houses.


Beach Street, Penang
Prior to the land reclamation at Weld Quay in the late 19 century, the shoreline was further inland with Beach Street as the original waterfront. Beginning with the Clock Tower at King Edward's Place, this street traversed through the different business communities,cultures and social class all the way to 'Sia Boey'(Town End).


Farquhar Street, Penang
Penang State Museum (Former Penang Free School) building can be glimpsed on the left. The shophouses at the end of street, around the former Dundas Count, have been demolised.


Weld Quay, Penang
Another view of the steam tram along Weld Quay. The front building is the Town Club at the corner of Downing Street.
